As Creative Director for SOFU Lifestyle, I have always believed that my role extends far beyond what happens on a page. Creative direction is about recognizing stories that deserve to be told, understanding why they matter, and helping create the vision and opportunity for those stories to reach an audience in a meaningful way.
That is why helping bring our feature on Atlanta literary icon Pearl Cleage to life was especially meaningful to me.

Pearl Cleage is more than an accomplished playwright, novelist, poet, and essayist. Her work lives at the intersection of culture, history, activism, womanhood, community, and the everyday experiences that shape who we become. Her connection to Atlanta and the Civil Rights Movement gives her story another layer of significance, particularly for a publication created to reflect the people, places, ideas, and culture of South Fulton and the greater Atlanta community.
As Creative Director, I wanted to help ensure that a story of this caliber could find its place within the publication and feel worthy of the woman at its center. That meant thinking beyond the headline and considering the larger editorial experience: the positioning, the visual presentation, the storytelling, and ultimately how the reader encounters the person behind the accomplishments.
The resulting feature, "Pearl Cleage: At the Intersection of Life, Art, and Activism," is a beautiful example of what can happen when creative vision, editorial storytelling, and cultural relevance come together.
For me, this is why I love creative direction. It gives me the opportunity to help turn ideas into experiences, conversations into stories, and stories into lasting cultural moments.
Sometimes the work is designing the page.
Sometimes the work is making sure the right story gets on the page in the first place.
